Skydrive from Microsoft Boosts Storage to 25 Gig

December 21, 2008 – 00:52

I read about this around the first of the month but never finished the article.  Procrastination for the win.  (I sure am pulling a lot of information off of Web Worker Daily of late.  I seem to have a lot of the same interests as one of the authors over there, namely Scott Blitstein.

He mentioned that Windows Live Sky Drive was upping it’s free storage limit to 25 gig.  This is better for online backups/etc, however I do not find the service as flexible or nearly as useful as DropBox.  You can read the post from Redmond here.

Books, EBooks, and Screen Reading

December 20, 2008 – 20:37

I’m an avid reader.  In this Aaron and I share a hobby, we even like many of the same authors.  Our biggest difference is in the fact that I rarely ever read “dead trees,”  I’ve been slowly migrating my pretty extensive collection of both hardbound and paperbacks to eBooks.  This is in response to Aaron’s book review articles, like this one.

OneNote and Dropbox Redux

December 19, 2008 – 21:11

I’ve been using DropBox.  A lot.  See my older post.  Also, I still think that OneNote from Microsoft is one of the most killer applications to come from ANYWHERE, not just Redmond.

Well, I have noticed traffic is way up on my blog here, and was wondering why.

Vista Service Pack 2 Beta

December 7, 2008 – 20:40

I read on the Gottabemobile site that Microsoft has released the public beta of Windows Vista Service Pack 2.  By all reports this fixes more annoyances and also further enhances/fixes the speed "loss" that some claim to have experienced over Windows XP.

NCSoft Closing Tabula Rasa

December 5, 2008 – 21:01

I beta tested NCSoft’s MMO Tabula Rasa, and I thought at the time that it was mostly hype.  I didn’t have a great experience playing it, thought it was quite boring.

Evidently so did the rest of the world.

David Swofford: We had to weigh Tabula Rasa against everything else that was out there. From our standpoint it was strictly a call … it wasn’t as successful as we needed it to be. We had to take this position

Buhbye.  Another MMO eats it.

This time I don’t think it was buggy gameplay or bad mechanics.  I just think the game wasn’t as much fun as some of the other mmo offerings out there.

NCSoft of course is about the bottom line, and Tabula Rasa’s bottom line was it was losing money consistently.

OMG! The Star Wars Holiday Special is 30!

December 4, 2008 – 22:18

Some of you might know that I have an almost unhealthy fascination with everything Star Wars.  In fact, I’m on the board of trustees for the Emperor’s Hammer, a non-profit corporation dedicated to everything Star Wars game related.

Test Server on Vista

November 27, 2008 – 11:00

Sitting around the house the other night I was almost regretting the move of my server from the home office to the new office.  A vpn connection to the server just isn’t the same as having a dedicated testing server on the LAN.

What to do, what to do?

Well, I no longer use Linux on my notebook for a lot of reasons, so Vista 32 Bit Ultimate resides there.

Blogging.

November 13, 2008 – 13:29

I was reading on Aaron’s blog today about why people blog.  I blog because I obviously have something to say and even I think I’m funny.

I have a few readers, not a lot.  But developing a relationship with other bloggers is helping out a lot.  Funny how that works.

I blog to practice my writing skills, as well as perhaps get some dedicated readers that like my writing to help me land a real writing gig.

I seem to be able to talk about anything, and the blogosphere lends itself to that type of eclectic attention span.

AOL’s Xdrive to Close

November 12, 2008 – 11:54

Well, I just received an email from AOL, stating that:

“We are writing to inform you that after Jan. 12, 2009, AOL will no longer support the Xdrive online storage service and the site will permanently close. It is important that you make plans to download your files to your local computer or hard drive.”

I haven’t used Xdrive in a while, I found the service to be ultimately not that useful to someone that has a large amount of readily accessible webspace on the net, already.

I also have been using the Dropbox service for several months, and it’s much more streamlined and superior for my needs.

Why do you think Xdrive went belly up?  Poor interface, too small of a storage area?  Speed?  I didn’t use it enough to be able to provide a reliable opinion.

But AOL has a LOT of money, Xdrive must have really started to suck.

It did give me the option to download all of the files that I had stored there as one big zip file, which I did.

Buh-bye, Xdrive.

Laziness rules!

November 1, 2008 – 19:29

I’m basically a lazy person.  I don’t like to expend effort unless:

a. I have to.

b. I get immediate results.

So I have been pretty lax on the blog lately.

Lots and lots of things have been happening.  The biggest is that I finally took the plunge and rented a rather large office space in beautiful downtown Pittsfield, IL.  It used to be a doctors office so it’s somewhat cut up into small offices that I am utilizing for various things.  I’m still cleaning the old stuff up and out.

It IS an old building, but I think it will work for my purpose.  Which is, basically to maintain my web presence consulting business while expanding back into computer repair.  Used computer and equipment sales seems to be a great way to expand at this point.

Caveat:  Make sure that used equipment customers understand used equipment is just that, and carries no warranty, period.  It worked when I set it up and cleaned it, after it leaves the shop it’s GONE, I offer no support, and not a lick of warranty.  If you want equipment with support and warranty, then buy something new and non-discount.
