Robert Lynn Aspirin

June 5, 2008 – 14:42

Some of my fondest memories growing up were generated by reading sci-fi and fantasy novels.  The Thieves World series of books were and are at the top of my list of favorites, too.  So I learned a few weeks back that Bob Aspirin had passed away, and it felt like I had lost a friend, even though I had only briefly met the man at a convention a long time ago.

I have all of that series of books in paperback, and most are dog eared from much reading.
I’ve noticed the buzz on Usenet about his books now and I think it’s a shame that so many people just discovered him after the publicity of his death.

Rest in Peace Bob.

For reference I named my IRC bot Skeeve.

Civvies LINE UP to try army S.O.S?

May 28, 2008 – 13:30

Yes, it’s true, over a thousand attendees at the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum on the grounds of Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa.

Full article here.

Personally, I was a big fan of the “Stuff on a Shingle.”  Let’s get something straight here, though, it’s honestly called “Shit on a Shingle.”  It is basically chipped beef gravy served on toast.  Most of the time you only got it in a mess hall, and I usually got it with over easy eggs on the toast smothered in the gravy.  Tasty.

I think most people have a bad or low opinion of Military food service.  The food that I ate while I was active duty was excellent, unless it was provided by a contractor.  Most notably the food service contractor at the ISA in Saudi in 91.  Weight loss.  We would actually eat MRE’s instead of going to breakfast there.

Ronald Jenkees on the tube

March 21, 2008 – 02:36

Cruising youtube the other day, Monty found a killer young musician named Ronald Jenkees. Check out his youtube channel for a wide variety of his stuff. Go and buy his CD!

Of particular interest is him playing with a guitar sound on his keyboard. Very well done and I’ve heard a lot of guitar… hahah!
Check it out here.

CALVEY, Donald C.; b: 13Dec1906, Hardin, Il.; d: 27Feb1991, Pittsfield, Il.; bu: West Cemetery, Pittsfield, Il.; m: Coralee McBride on 4May1946 in Bowling Green, Mo.; fa: Charles E. Calvey; mo: Agnes Ferguson. WWII Navy vet. Survived by his wife; two sons: David Calvey of Pittsfield and Rodney Walker of Grafton; one daughter: Mary Lee Damron of Sarasota, Fla.; eight grandchildren; one g-grandchild; one brother: Earl Calvey of Clarksville, Mo.; and one sister: Leona Roth of Kampsville. Preceded by one son: Donald Joseph; one granddaughter; two sisters; and one brother.

That’s the text of my grandpa’s obituary as found online on the rootsweb site. It doesn’t tell how much we loved him or how much I miss him.

Like my grandfather, I’m a veteran. Because I’m a veteran I was in southern Iraq when he passed, and I have a lot of trouble dealing with it. Maybe it’s the no closure issue with missing the funeral, or just not getting to say goodbye.

I think that by him being a veteran he would understand why I wasn’t there. I hope so.

I miss you, Grandpa.

Moved to a new host

January 29, 2008 – 19:17

So i moved to a new webhosting account.  Managing 92 domains from 42gh and the 16 or so of mine on separate hosting was kinda dumb so we merged them on a new vps account on serveint.  I’ll let you know how that works out.
